Wang Weijue (b. 1993, Nanjing, China) received her Bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University, USA, in 2015, and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2017.
Wang’s work does not depict scenes, but rather emotions that are ambiguous, fluid, and caught in tension—a quality tied as much to the physical nature of her long-used medium, wool felt, as to the conceptual strategy of articulating a distinct voice forged through women’s survival and reflection under structural pressures. She translates the public gaze and imagination of desire into countless needle pricks endured by soft materials—a process that metaphorically suggests repetition and subtle violence while also embodying, on a material level, the artist’s intensive labor in large-scale works. Through the incorporation of mixed media and multidimensional collage, she further expands the conversation around the boundaries between body and power. What is routinely suppressed in daily life thus emerges: body parts revealing sexuality, faces hovering between agony and ecstasy, the textures of domestic textiles—their force latent beneath a veneer of beauty, persistently murmuring within the friction of materials and the cracks of structures.
